Memi Mine Lake

If you are looking for a unique and scenic attraction in Cyprus, you might want to visit the Memi Mine Lake, located just outside the village of Xyliatos in the Nicosia district. This lake was formed by a large crater that was left behind by a former copper and iron mine that operated from 1954 to 1971 and partly from 1987 to 1990. The lake is filled with rainwater that changes colour according to the season, creating a stunning spectacle of nature. The Memi Mine was one of the many mining sites that exploited the rich mineral resources of Cyprus, especially copper, which gave the island its name (from the Greek word kypros). The mine employed hundreds of workers who extracted ore from underground tunnels and open pits. The mine also had a processing plant, a railway line and a power station. However, due to political instability, environmental issues and economic decline, the mine was eventually abandoned and left to decay. The crater that was created by the mining activities gradually filled up with rainwater over the years, forming a lake that covers an area of about 25 hectares. The lake is surrounded by steep slopes covered with pine trees and shrubs, creating a contrast between the green vegetation and the blue water. The water level varies depending on the rainfall and evaporation rates. The most remarkable feature of this lake is its changing colour palette. This is due to the presence of a copper alloy at the bottom of the lake, which reacts with oxygen and sunlight in different ways throughout the year. In winter, when there is more rainfall and less sunlight, the water turns dark green. In spring, when there is more sunlight and less rainfall, the water becomes turquoise. In summer, when there is high evaporation rate and intense sunlight, the water turns deep blue. In autumn, when there is less evaporation rate and less sunlight, the water changes to light green. The Memi Mine Lake is not only a beautiful sight but also a habitat for various species of birds, fish and amphibians. Some of these include herons, ducks, coots, frogs and carp. The lake also attracts visitors who enjoy hiking around it or taking photos of its stunning colours. The Memi Mine Lake is one of those hidden gems that reveal Cyprus’s rich history and natural beauty. It is a place where you can admire nature’s artistry while learning about its past. If you are interested in visiting this attraction, you can reach it by car from Nicosia or Limassol via Xyliatos village or by bus from Nicosia via Agrokipia village.
