Germasogeia Dam

Cyprus is known for its sunny beaches, historic landmarks, and mouth-watering cuisine. However, the island also boasts manmade lakes that offer a unique experience for visitors and residents alike. One of these lakes is the Germasogeia Dam, located in the Limassol district of the island. Built-in 1968 on land owned by the Germasogeia Municipality, the dam serves as an important water irrigation system, providing water to the surrounding communities. It takes in water from the Amatho River, which is of dirt type and has an altitude of 49 metres. The dam has a capacity of 13.5 million cubical meters of water and covers an area of 110 hectares. Apart from being a source of water, the Germasogeia Dam has become an important habitat area for many migratory birds during spring and summer. The wetland created around the dam also hosts a diverse range of flora, which provides a beautiful backdrop for visitors to enjoy a leisurely walk or take photos. In addition to the stunning natural environment, the area around the Germasogeia Dam is an ideal destination for a picnic or an excursion. For many years, residents of the surrounding areas, as well as Limassol in general, have flocked to the banks of the dam to celebrate the beginning of traditional Lent. The manmade lake also provides an excellent location for sports and cultural activities. Nautical clubs train on the lake for sports such as canoeing and kayaking, and fishing is also allowed with a special license provided by the department of fishing. One of the most significant events in the history of the Germasogeia Dam was the construction of the bridge in 2008. Part of the Akrounda Germasogeia road had become dangerous due to landslides, making the bridge a necessary addition. The bridge is 111 metres long and spans the dam, connecting the road with the north and south sides of the dam. The construction took 18 months to complete and has improved the safety and accessibility of the surrounding areas. However, the Germasogeia Dam has not been without its challenges. In 2008, the island experienced a severe drought that resulted in the dam being almost completely empty. This drought had a significant impact on the ecosystem of the dam, causing ecological destruction and putting the entire ecosystem in danger. This was the first time the dam had been so empty, and it resulted in very few fish being able to survive. Despite the challenges, the Germasogeia Dam remains a jewel in Limassol's crown. It provides water for irrigation and creates a stunning environment for migratory birds and a diverse range of flora. It also offers a place for visitors and residents to enjoy recreational activities such as fishing, kayaking, and picnicking. The bridge constructed over the dam has improved accessibility to the surrounding areas and increased safety. It is an essential part of the Limassol district's landscape and is a must-visit destination for those interested in the natural beauty and history of Cyprus.
