Kourion Ancient Amphitheater

Kourion was an important city-kingdom in antiquity and the theater is of great significance. The theater was constructed at the end of the 2nd century BC and took its current dimensions during the 2nd century AD. It consists of a semicircular orchestra surrounded by seats of the cavea, which are subterranean cells. The theater could seat up to 3,500 spectators. On either side of the stage were two vaulted parodoi from where the audience entered the theater. The theater was enclosed to the south by the building of the scaenae frons (façade), which must have reached the height of the cavea, though today only the foundations remain. In the beginning of the 3rd century AD, modifications were made to the theater, and it was transformed into an arena that was used for fights with wild animals. At the end of the 3rd century AD, the arena spectacles declined, and the theater returned to its original purpose. Excavations at the Kourion Ancient Amphitheater began in 1933 and were conducted by the University of Pennsylvania, while many other University Archaeological Missions - as well as the Cyprus Department of Antiquities - continued the excavations. Today, the Kourion Ancient Amphitheater is a popular destination for tourists and locals.
