Prodromos Dam
Cyprus is an island nation that is known for its beautiful beaches, ancient ruins, and stunning landscapes. But there is more to this Mediterranean gem than meets the eye. Hidden away in the mountains, visitors will find one of Cyprus's most serene and picturesque attractions - the Prodromos Dam.
Located just 2 km before the Prodromos village and at an altitude of 1600 meters, the Prodromos Dam is a symmetrical reservoir surrounded by thick pine forests, creating a tranquil, artificial lake in one of the highest locations of the island. It is a popular destination for both locals and tourists looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the cities and enjoy the beauty of nature.
Constructed in 1962 as a riverside basin, the Prodromos water reservoir was made with soil and is 10 meters deep with a surface area of approximately 22 square meters. It has a capacity of up to 122,000 cubic meters of water, making it an essential source of water for the surrounding areas.
The relatively small surface area and high altitude of the reservoir's location lead to the water freezing over during the winter months. This transforms the reservoir into a makeshift ice rink, offering visitors a unique and magical experience. The frozen reservoir in winter offers a very different image from other seasons, but the serenity that the setting inspires and the grandeur of nature surrounding it is a common factor all year round.
The Prodromos Dam Picnic Site which is located next to the dam, has a capacity of 250 people and is a perfect spot for picnics and outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, and birdwatching.
The tranquil surroundings of the reservoir make it an excellent spot for fishing enthusiasts. The water is stocked with fish, and visitors can try their hand at catching species such as rainbow trout, carp, and bass. For those who prefer birdwatching, the surrounding forest is home to a variety of birds such as the European robin, the common blackbird, and the Eurasian jay.
One of the most striking things about the Prodromos Dam is the surrounding landscape. The thick pine forests that surround the reservoir provide a stunning contrast to the clear blue waters of the lake. Visitors can take a leisurely walk around the lake and enjoy the natural beauty that the area has to offer.
In addition to the natural beauty, the area around the reservoir is also rich in history and culture. The nearby village of Prodromos is one of the highest villages in Cyprus and has a long and storied history dating back to ancient times. Visitors can explore the village and learn about its history and culture while enjoying the stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
The Prodromos Dam is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Cyprus. The serene surroundings, stunning landscapes, and rich history and culture make it an unforgettable experience. Whether you're looking for a relaxing picnic spot or an outdoor adventure, the Prodromos Dam has something for everyone.
