Artemis
The Artemis nature trail in Cyprus is a must-visit for any nature lover or hiking enthusiast. The trail is named after the Greek goddess Artemis, who was the daughter of Zeus and Leto, and the twin sister of Apollo. The route circles around Mount Olympus (Chionistra) at an average altitude of 1,850m, offering visitors stunning views of the Limassol, Paphos and Nicosia districts.
One of the most remarkable features of the trail is the ancient black pines (pinus nigra) that are more than 500 years old. The forest is also home to rare and rich flora, including catmint, germander, alyssum, Troodos sage, and juniper. As you walk along the trail, you will see information signs that help you identify the different plant species.
In addition to the flora, the rocks of the area are also of interest. The main rocks in the broader area are harzburgite, which is the brittle remainder of the partial melting of the Upper Mantle at a depth of approximately 60km beneath the Tethys ocean floor. The rocks also contain newer seams of pegmatitic gabbro, rodingite and pyroxenite. Along the fissures, the harzburgite has been transformed into green serpentinite. Walking on the highest point of the Troodos range is like walking on rocks belonging to the Earth's Upper Mantle, which is an impressive feat.
The Artemis nature trail is located within the Troodos National Forest Park, which is a NATURA 2000 area. The park is home to unique flora and fauna that can't be found anywhere else in Cyprus. At least one in every two plants that you will see on this nature trail is endemic to Cyprus or Troodos, making the park a must-visit for any nature enthusiast.
The trail is not particularly challenging, with no notable changes of gradient except towards the end after the Ski Club, where it is on an incline for 200-300 metres. Along the way, visitors will come across the Teisia tis Palias Choras (Walls of Old Chora), the ruins of makeshift fortifications built in the last year of the Venetian period in Cyprus (1571) by a group of Venetian generals as defence against the Ottomans. The walls are of historical interest and offer a glimpse into the island's rich history.
The Artemis nature trail in Cyprus is a unique and must-visit destination for any nature lover or hiking enthusiast. The trail's rich flora, stunning views, and unique geological features make it an experience that is not to be missed. Whether you're an experienced hiker or a beginner, the Artemis nature trail has something to offer everyone.
